Davidson E-News for Counselors, December 2017
Dear Counselor Colleagues,
"We work together to ask the hard questions. And then we work together to find the answers, understanding that we learn most from those not like ourselves and remembering to celebrate our individual perspectives and abilities." This is how Davidson's President Dr. Carol Quillen describes our approach to teaching and learning. In this edition of our Counselor E-Newsletter, we want to introduce you to some of the questions we've asked and some of the ways we're looking for answers and celebrating one another.
As always, if you have any questions for us or would like specific topics to be addressed in future, don't hesitate to reach out. Just drop us a note at admission@davidson.edu with Counselor Newsletter in the subject line and we'll be in touch right away.
We value your insights and feedback. We look forward to hearing from you!

 | Facing Our Truth - Ten Minute Plays on Trayvon, Race, and Privilege | By Dan O'Brien, Winter Miller, Mona Mansour and Tala Manassah, Dominique Morisseau, Marcus Gardley, and A. Rey Pamatmat • Directed by Sharon Green
Originally commissioned by The New Black Fest, Facing Our Truth: Ten Minute Plays on Trayvon, Race, and Privilege is a collection of short plays reflecting on race relations in the United States. Thanks to a Mellon grant supporting Justice, Equality, and Community, performances were offered free of charge. Attendance rates were so high, extra performances were added. |
 | The Theatre Can Open Dialogue on Tough Topics | It's tough to talk about race. Words escalate into conflict, or people shut each other down, or they never engage in the first place. Civil discourse gets lost.
The power of storytelling provided a way back toward honest, respectful, civil discourse on difficult topics with the opening of "Facing Our Truth: Ten-Minute Plays on Trayvon, Race, and Privilege."

Starting with the class of 2021, every Davidson student must take one course that satisfies the Justice, Equality, and Community (JEC) requirement. These courses address the manifestations of justice and equality in various communities, locales, nations or regions,
and focus on methods and theories used to analyze, spotlight, or remedy instances of injustice and inequality. | | |
