The "Meet My World" grant provides pairs of Davidson students with up to $10,000 to cover round-trip plane tickets, visa and immunization costs, and daily costs for accommodations and cultural activities.

"The goal [of the grant] from the outset was to flip the power dynamic, putting the international student in the position of being the host, and being the expert, and being the teacher," said Bea Cornett, Davidson's international student adviser. "[Doing so gives] the international student the experience of being the type of person that a lot of their peers have been to them."

One often sees stories about Davidson student outreach into communities beyond the campus. But the commitment to service and impact is deeply felt by our staff and faculty, too.

When Professors Joseph Ewoodzie Jr. and Dan Layman partnered with Principal Timisha Barnes-Jones '92, Ph.D. to bring the men's soccer program back to West Charlotte High School, they undersold themselves on the potential difficulties of their challenge. Let's get past the clichés of "challenging" and "rewarding." The five seniors and eight underclassmen they coached didn't really know what they were signing up for, either. They didn't win a single game. But they stuck it out and the West Charlotte Lions soccer team was reborn. Most of them will be back next year. So will Ewoodzie and Layman, who plan to expand their coaching to help with academics and preparing their team for college.
