    A sunny commencement morning greeted the Davidson Class of 2019 and their families, mentors, and friends on May 19th.

    "You've been incredibly fun to watch," said Davidson College President Carol Quillen. "You've started businesses, cooked for hungry neighbors, and found jobs for refugees."

    "Davidson is stronger, more courageous, and more humane because you were here," Quillen said.She then sent them out into the world with this advice,"Approach other people through our shared vulnerability. Begin not with suspicion but with empathy, and you will come to know love. Live like a human being.”

    Access Davidson

    Access Davidson is designed to reach out to students from traditionally under-represented groups, including CBO-affiliated students. Due to the brevity of the visit, students living outside of the United States are not eligible for consideration. Only students who have not been on a full visit to campus will be selected for the program. 

    To be considered for the program, students must  1) complete the online application, and 
    2) upload their current high school transcript with a senior schedule and standardized test scores. Please email Amy Jo Withers at amwithers@davidson.edu or call 704-894-2187 for assistance during any step of the application process.

    Upon completion of the Access Davidson application, an application for admission to Davidson, with an application fee waiver, will be opened on that student's behalf.

    Davidson invites high school seniors and their families to attend Discover Davidson on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019 and experience all that the college offers.

    Discover Davidson is designed to allow prospective students to discover the unique qualities that create the Davidson experience:

    Discover the Purpose: Hear from current students and other members of the community.

    Discover the Passion: Sit in on a sample lecture given by one of our world-class faculty members.

    Discover the Place: Explore our picturesque 450-acre campus and incredible facilities with a student tour guide.

    Discover the Possibilities: Learn about the admission process and our no-loan financial aid policy that offers students the opportunity to graduate debt-free.

    Discover the People: Engage current Davidson students in a panel for prospective students, or attend a panel discussion for families and mentors with faculty, staff and students. 

    Registration for Discover Davidson will open soon. While there is not an overnight stay in conjunction with Discover Davidson, students are welcome to explore our Senior Overnight options this fall.

    When Natalie Connell '19 saw her aunt battle brain cancer, suffering through grueling treatment before her painful death, she wondered: Isn't there a more humane way to die?

    Ky Roland '19 remembers looking around the classroom of her high-level, middle-school math course and wondering: Why aren't there more girls in here?

    They plan to spend the next year seeking answers and better outcomes.

    The two Davidson College biology majors -- both NCAA DI athletes -- have won prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowships that will send them for a year abroad after they graduate in May.

    $1 Million Grant Improves Inclusivity in STEM Education and Supports Curricular Innovations
     

    A $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), through their Inclusive Excellence initiative, will allow Davidson College increased capacity to cultivate and sustain environments in which all students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields can thrive. Davidson is one of 33 institutions to receive the competitive grant.

    First-generation college students as well as underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities are over-represented among students entering college wanting to study STEM, yet woefully underrepresented among those who complete STEM baccalaureate and doctoral degrees.

    Mind to Matter: Creative Work Takes Center Stage at Symposium
     

    At the first annual Verna Miller Case Research and Creative Works Symposium (already fondly known as The Verna), throngs of students, faculty, staff and visitors flocked to campus on a sunny spring day to celebrate students’ accomplishments of the past year. 

    The conference highlighted a broad spectrum of achievement, from science to mathematics to the arts and humanities. Students acted, sang, and played instruments. They presented their research projects targeting homelessness, racism and deadly diseases.  Some described their art history study abroad.  Others helped classmates create their own works of art.  Attendees explored, discovered, laughed and wondered – and shared a picnic lunch.

    “For many, it’s our favorite day of the year,” said Davidson College President Carol Quillen. “You realize what an amazing group of young people -- and the faculty that supports them -- we have here.”
