Eligibility for student financial assistance is based on your Davidson College cost of attendance until an off-campus cost of attendance is received from the host institution. When the Davidson College Financial Aid Office is notified of your official plans to study away from Davidson, we will obtain the program’s costs and adjust your financial aid offer accordingly. We will not be able to discuss any changes to your financial aid offer until the external budget is received and reviewed.
You will receive and pay two invoices: 1) in order to remain continuously enrolled, you will pay tuition to Davidson, and Davidson will in turn pay the program’s tuition on your behalf; 2) you will pay the program for all non-tuition/transcript fees, such as housing. If the cost of your program, including Davidson's tuition, is less than or equal to the cost of a semester at Davidson, your total payments to both Davidson and the external program will not exceed your family contribution for a semester on campus. If the cost of your program, including Davidson's tuition, is greater than the cost of a semester at Davidson, the additional cost becomes your responsibility.
If you are eligible for any type of financial aid for your external program, funds will be applied to your student account with Davidson’s Controller's Office. If your financial aid exceeds the cost of Davidson's tuition, any remaining funds can be transferred to your bank account via direct deposit. For this to occur, you must provide the appropriate bank account information, an enrollment verification from the program, and (optional, but highly recommended) a designated power of attorney.
If you receive....
a. Davidson College Need-Based Aid
You may receive the need-based financial aid up to your calculated eligibility based on the program's Cost of Attendance, including Davidson's tuition, OR the Davidson on-campus Cost of Attendance, whichever is less. In other words, if your program provider's Cost of Attendance is less than Davidson’s, your financial aid offer will be reduced. If your program provider's Cost of Attendance is more than Davidson’s, your Davidson College aid offer will not be increased to cover the additional cost.
b. Davidson College Non-Need-Based (Scholarship) Aid
You may receive the full amount of your Davidson scholarship if it is less than your program’s Cost of Attendance. If the scholarship is greater than the program's Cost of Attendance, the scholarship will be reduced, accordingly.
c. Davidson College Athletic Scholarship/Grant-In-Aid
You must contact Katy McNay, Davidson's NCAA Compliance Director, to determine the transferability of your athletic award.
d. Federal or Private Loans
You may use loans to assist in meeting your program's Cost of Attendance. You must complete any loan applications before departure. No one can complete a loan application on your behalf, even with a power of attorney.
e. Outside Resources
Following our usual outside resource policy, students may generally receive direct benefit of up to $5,000 in outside resources before institutional aid is potentially adjusted. However, if your off-campus study costs are greater than costs on campus, and if you have outside resources totaling more than $5,000, any "excess" resource may be applied toward the greater-than-usual costs of your program. It is still the case, though, that any funds that cannot be expended in the manner outlined above would reduce Davidson College aid; and all sources of aid together may not exceed your total cost of attendance.
Financial aid eligibility may be reduced in future semesters if upon completion of your external program the Registrar does not approve Davidson credit for four courses per semester. Davidson financial aid is limited to the equivalent of four years or eight semesters, and courses that are either dropped or not approved for credit can potentially result in a student's incurring extra costs for which assistance may not be available.
International students may not use their Davidson funds to study in their home country.
